Chronic Pain in musculo skeletal problems is very complex. Each individual copes and manages their chronic pain in different
ways.
Treatment approaches vary across the UK and there is a lottery postcode to the standard and types of treatment available.
Some people are fortunate to live in a locality where there is a pain clinic run by a specialist who has advanced training
in musculo skeletal problems however this is very "ad hoc" . However if you are willing to travel you can get referred to
a pain clinic that meets your needs elsewhere.
Treatment often involves lifestyle changes and you should be supported and encouraged to make chages necessary such as
exercising more, shown how to stretch properly, Many pain patients are not shown or supported through this and are "held back"
in the recovery process.
Many services use a traditional medical model and focus on clinical issues without understanding the psychological impact
pain has on them. Many pain teams are fortunate tohave psychologists attached or consultants who are aware of the psychological
implications of chronic pain.
As well as any clinical treatment like injections you should be offerred some help with coping strategies-if not-ask!
Treatment can be through a hospital pain clinic or through a pain management programme which is a short residential or
day programme which works with people to help them manage their pain better without resorting to increasing their medication
unnecessarily. The main focus on Pain Management programmes is to increase physical fitness, develop coping strategies as well
as focussing on improving your quality of life.
When choosing a health practitioner through the private sector make sure they are registered with either the General
Medical Council or Health Professions Council. Don't be afraid to ask about previous experience working in pain management
and further training in this field.
